Fallout 76: Burning Springs
New explorable region and bounties!

Location Name
Fort Steuben

Location Type
Bounty Hunting Location

Overview
The main purpose of this location was to act as an interesting combat space for the new bounty hunting mechanic. When designing the combat space, I wanted to ensure that whatever way the player approached the location they always had different options to proceed. There are a lot of stealth opportunities throughout the Fort, but when the player is eventually discovered the enemies will rush to activate a klaxon.

Whenever the player does enter full combat, there are plenty of cover points that allow the player to easily progress further into the area.

Responsibilities

  • Creating and iterating on the layout, also bringing the level through to completion.

  • Adjusting the combat to ensure the location makes for a good fit for the bounty hunting mechanic.

  • Placement and iteration on AI behaviour (non-combat and combat)

  • Writing accompanying fiction to help explain the pre-war purpose of the location.

  • Ensuring that, regardless of the direction the player approaches the location from, they always have an option for entry.

  • Ensuring that players are able to make meaningful choices that align with their build/playstyle.

Location Name
Railroad Service Yard

Location Type
Bounty Hunting Location

Overview
For this location I wanted to create an eerie atmosphere. Around the location are various points where ghouls will crawl out and ambush the player.  This experience also mimics the experience of those in the fiction of this location.  Various bodies are placed alongside the ambushes to give the player an idea of what could happen to them. Overall, I think the combat in this location is really fun and the space also lends itself well to bounty hunting.

Responsibilities

  • Creating and iterating on the layout, also bringing the level through to completion.

  • Adjusting the combat to ensure it helps ensure the intended tone.

  • Placement and iteration on AI behaviour (non-combat and combat).

  • Writing accompanying fiction to help explain the pre-war and post-war purpose of the location.

  • Ensuring that, regardless of the direction the player approaches the location from, they always have an option for entry.

  • Ensuring that the player feels the need to remain alert when traversing the location.

Location Name
Railroad Service Yard Interior

Location Type
Quest Location

Overview
This was a purpose built interior for one of our quests in Burning Springs. The train car is home to a crazed father who's son has gone missing. I wanted to make sure that it was obvious he was going a little crazy being stuck in this environment without his son but also that the place seemed orderly enough as if he was ready for his son to return home.

Responsibilities

  • Creating and implementing the space.

  • Ensuring all quest requirements were met for the space and that it was setup to be used by QD.

  • Set-dressing alongside environment art to portray the character as intended.

  • Making sure that the interior remained low scope while having a good amount of detail.
